Valentine’s Day, Chocolate & Toothpaste

Looking for the perfect gift for your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day? You could go with the traditional heart shaped box of chocolates or you could try something even sweeter —- toothpaste.

The new Mint Chocolate Trek flavor is part of the new line called Crest Be, toothpastes meant to excite and inspire while still providing all the standard oral-hygiene benefits. The other two flavors in the line so far- Lime Spearmint Zest and Vanilla Mint Spark.

Crest hopes these new exciting flavors will arouse your senses and energize your brushing routine like never before! This new line of toothpaste hit the shelves locally last week.

So, if your looking for a last minute gift for your special Valentine, forget the heart shaped box of candy, don’t rush to the jewelry store. Instead give the gift of healthy teeth!

Happy Valentines Day!

* Just a word of caution to parents. These new toothpastes contain the same amount of fluoride as regular products but the enhanced flavor may encourage young children to swallow more of the toothpaste than desired. While finding a flavor your child will brush with is important, a flavor that they don’t particularly love will discourage them from swallowing a lot of the paste. Always use a pea size amount and monitor your young child’s brushing to limit the amount of paste they are swallowing. If you have questions, always consult with your dentist.

Mint Chocolate Trek is one of the new bold flavors Procter & Gamble is unveiling as part of its Crest Be line of toothpaste. The new flavors will be on shelves the first week of February.

Floss Daily and Properly

Everyone knows flossing daily is recommended however flossing properly is often ignored. Flossing incorrectly or aggressively can be both frustrating and damaging. As seen in the photo taken by our hygienist, Heather Nygard, RDH, aggressive flossing in a sawing motion has led to gingival clefting and recession around the patient’s molar.

Proper flossing technique starts with a long piece of floss, approximately 18 inches. Wind the floss around the middle finger of each hand. Hold the floss taut between the thumb of one hand and forefinger of the other, leaving about an inch between the two. Carefully, floss between two teeth. If needed use a back and forth motion to ease the floss between the contact of the two teeth. Try not to snap the floss through the contact which can lead to injury of the gum tissue. Gently bring the floss to the gumline, curve the floss around the tooth and slide it up and down along the tooth surface. Do not saw back and forth at the gumline aggressively. If you have not been a diligent ‘flosser’ in the past, you may experience slight discomfort initially along with some bleeding gums. These symptoms may be an indication of gingivitis or an underlying periodontal condition however do not be discouraged. Continue to floss and as the gums become healthier the discomfort and bleeding should resolve. Additionally, it is also important to maintain your recall appointments with your dentist.

Patients always ask what the best floss is to use at home. The answer is whatever floss you prefer. The most important factor is picking a product that you find ease and pleasant to use and therefore you are more likely to floss regularly. Numerous studies have shown no significant difference in the effectiveness of any of the different kinds of floss, including waxed vs. unwaxed.

Happy Flossing!

Our Patients Giving Back Globally

We are always proud of how many of our patients are actively involved in the giving of their time and efforts to benefit both our local communities and abroad. We love to share these great and inspiring stories.

Our patient, Lara Bryfonski, is a teacher with, Bilingual Education for Central America. This year, through their partnership with three community-based Honduran organizations, over 450 children in Pre-K to 9th grade were educated at three partner schools by a team of 23 US volunteers and 9 Hondurans.

This summer Lara asked if we would donate toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss so that she could distribute it to the students while on her mission. Obviously, we were only to happy to help. The children in the grade school at San Jeronimo Bilingual School, Cofradia, Honduras do not have any access to dental care.

People going above and beyond to help others is worth sharing and celebrating. If you would like to learn more about this organization, you can visit http://www.becaschools.org/.

Improve Your Smile

Want to improve your smile but maintain a natural look?  More and more people are looking to upgrade their smile but many are worried that the new teeth will look unnatural or fake. Our office strives to deliver the results you desire.

In this case, our patient was looking to correct the crowding and discolored front teeth without completely altering the look of her smile.  Four veneers were completed, eliminating all her cosmetic concerns and rejuvenating her smile without a drastic change.

This approach not only yields a beautiful and natural smile but also eliminates the unnecessary treatment of additional teeth and can be a more affordable option.  If you or someone you know is interested in improving their smile, let one of our experienced dentists help.

All photos published to this blog are actual patients of Saratoga Springs Dentists. This case was completed by Dr. Gregory P. Dodd.
