About Intra-Oral Camera

An Intra-Oral camera is a small video camera that takes an X-ray of the outside of the gum or tooth. The intraoral camera resembles an oversized pen and although usage varies depending on the model-type, this image-taking device is outfitted with a disposable protective sheath for each new patient. While simultaneously viewing a monitor, the dentist inserts the camera into a patient's mouth and gently shifts it about so that images can be taken from a variety of angles.

Intra-Oral Camera FAQs

What is the purpose of using an intra-oral camera?
Intra-oral cameras are very useful in the dental world. Equipped with 90-degree rotation, lights, and magnifying elements, these cameras allow for a very up-close-and-personal look at what may be going on inside your mouth. These tools are especially useful in the diagnostic phase when your dentist is administering your dental assessment.

What does the camera take pictures of?
Your provider at Saratoga Springs Family Dentistry can use this camera to take pictures of various areas of the mouth, most typically the teeth and gums. Because of the camera's small size and ability to get up-close angles, we are able to use these cameras to see areas of your mouth that are otherwise tricky or impossible to image. You will be able to see the photos as well as they are projected in real time onto a display in your exam room.

Are intra-oral cameras safe?
We want to reassure our patients that these imaging systems are completely safe to use. You will not feel any pain or sensation from the camera, just the potential for briefly awkward angles inside your mouth. In addition, our cameras are sanitized carefully to ensure the cleanliness of our equipment.
